“Reading Friendly” Recipe

autumn.gif

Today marks our last “official” post in the Summer of 2016. Just 2 days from now, on Thursday, September 22, Fall begins and the weather is going to slowly turn colder.

That means it’s almost time to turn off the air conditioner (depending on where you live) and open the windows to welcome in that brisk Autumn breeze. Leaves are changing color, apple-picking is in full effect, pumpkins are slowly showing up EVERYWHERE you look, and yummy Fall treats are gradually replacing the watermelon and corn-on-the-cob at the dinner table. Yummm!

We have posted a recipe below for one of our favorite Fall desserts from Betty Crocker. And the best part, it’s reader friendly! That means that there are only a few simple steps and then it will basically cook itself so that you can stay snuggled up on the couch with the brand new book that you  just ordered from www.discoverbooks.com…JACKPOT!

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Bon Appetit!

Slow-Cooker Apple-Cinnamon Cobbler

½ cup sugar

¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 box Betty Crocker™ SuperMoist™ yellow cake mix (dry)

½ cup cold butter, cut into cubes

Whipped cream, if desired

Books…For The Win!

I think we can all agree that there are some crazy things happening in today’s world and sometimes we wish we could just escape from all the madness and get back to basics…right? I know I do. That is why we have compiled a list of some great reads, available on our site, that make for much better ways to pass your time than dealing with life’s little headaches. Check them out below!

1) Instead of Having Your Samsung Galaxy catch on fire, check out the #1 New York Times best seller by Stieg Larsson, The Girl Who Played With Fire. A much safer alternative…and you can take it through airport security! Yay!

2) It’s true that everyone has financial troubles from time to time, but singer/songwriter Nelly is taking being in debt to a whole new level. Read more about his tax problems here and in the meantime, avoid ending up like Nelly by grabbing Clark Howard’s, Get Clark Smart: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Rich From Americas Money-Saving Experta SUPER DEAL on our website for a limited time! Looks like Nelly won’t be riding anywhere for a while….

3) Just like Ryan Lochte, I know how much I hate it when I accidentally make up an entire story, lie about it countless times, terrify an entire population with the prospect of being robbed by a fake gunman and build an empire of haters. Happens too often to keep track of and we can definitely sympathize. But what if there were a way to avoid having it happen to you?! We have the solution…if you are reading Barbara Frederickson’s, Positivity: Top-Notch Research Reveals the Upward Spiral That Will Change Your Life you will have very little time to fall into this trap and let the haters get the best of you. #hatersgonnahate

4) Last but not least, on a more serious note, most of us would likely admit that we spend a little bit too much time wrapped up in the technology of today.  It is the most gorgeous time of year for most people with fall quickly approaching so get outside, soak in some Vitamin D, grab a pumpkin spiced latte, rock your flannel and get lost in a good book. Our favorite book right now – The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins – will soon be released in theaters so make sure you read it before you start hearing spoilers from your friends! Get it from Discover Books now for only $5.50!

We hope all of our followers had a fantastic Labor Day Weekend!

We have a great blog for you today!

In today’s digital age, it’s safe to say that a lot of us enjoy reading but we’re in such a hurry that we resort to using electronic alternatives like e-readers and tablets. Why? They seem to be easier and more portable for an on-the-go lifestyle, right?

While that might be true, they are likely taking a toll on your physical and mental health!

WE KNOW…SCARY STUFF!!!

This week’s post comes from a SUPER interesting article on Medicaldaily.com explaining why good ‘old-fashioned paper books are better for you in a lot of ways.

Medical Daily says that “Researchers have been examining the differences between reading regular books and e-books for years. Many of the studies have shown that reading old-fashioned books has plenty of advantages over e-books, which can be gateways to other electronic distractions, all of which screw with your sleep. This is why you should ditch the screen for printed pages.”

The article mentions a 2014 study that found that

“readers who used Kindles were less competent in recalling the plot and events in the book than those who used paperbacks.”

They also say that a recent study done at Harvard University discovered that

“reading an e-book before bed lessened the production of an important sleep hormone known as melatonin. As a result, people took much longer to fall asleep, experienced less deep sleep, and were more fatigued in the morning.”

There are tons of other interesting facts and you can CLICK HERE to read the whole article.

Also, should this compel you to switch from your handy, dandy e-reader to paper books, you can find all of the titles you love in one convenient location on our website, www.discoverbooks.com.
